Barriers to Adventure Archives

Think You Can’t Afford an Adventurous Life?

We had long ago passed the point of enjoyment. The canal tow path had disintegrated into a slippery muddy morass which saw our feet sliding treacherously towards the murky green water with every other step. Darkness had fallen some time before and we struggled to spot firmer ground on which to plant our feet in the wobbly light cast by our head torches. We were weary, uncommunicative and depleted after hours of walking, but in the part of my mind still capable of coherent thought I was still excited about our adventure.

I have always had an adventurous streak and yearned to explore as much of the world as possible, preferably on foot. More interested in the wild and mountainous parts of the world and willing to push my body to its limits, I have been fortunate enough to enjoy some great hikes. However I have felt a sense of frustration that my lack of surplus money has excluded me from many of the trips I wanted to take. I thought that a hike only counted as a proper adventure if it took place somewhere remote and preferably unpronounceable.

Barriers to Adventure Number Two- MONEY

So in the last post we talked about a lack of time keeping people from living the adventurous life of their dreams. In this post we are going to explore another great big barrier- lack of money…

I get you. Adventures cost money. Big adventures cost big money. I have a huge list of all the adventures I could do right now if I had the money to do them… trekking in the Himalaya… walking along the Great Wall of China… storm chasing in America… but I can’t afford them and I’m willing to bet the you can’t either.

We are constantly being told that the cost of living is spiralling ever upwards, and it certainly feels like it. Too much month left at the end of the money, unexpected bills, going into the supermarket for a ‘couple of bits’ and coming out with a trolley load of stuff…it’s tough to save anything at all and any money you do manage to squirrel away earns a pitiful rate of interest. It’s no wonder even a small trip feels out of reach.

But being skint needn’t necessarily mean that you have to put your adventure dreams on hold- it’s time we got a little creative…

Barriers to Adventure Number One- TIME

AdventureSo what’s stopping you from putting more adventure into your life? If you are getting out there having adventure after crazy adventure then you don‘t need to read this post, but chances are you are not. Don’t you find that the weeks and months just fly by (I’m convinced the years are actually getting shorter!) and before you know it another precious, irreplaceable year of your life has gone forever, leaving you wondering just where it went and realising that you actually did very few of the things you intended to achieve.

Depressing isn’t it?

Look, I’m not judging anyone- this happens to me as well- I am not just writing these posts for you, you know!! We would all like to have lots more adventures and to experience far more than we do- but somehow we never seem to get around to it and end up doing the same old stuff day in and day out… whole days and weeks get lost in the minutiae of every day living and working.

Asking around people I know, it appears that one of the main blocks to a truly adventurous life is time- or rather the lack of it. I fully understand this- we are so very busy nowadays and there are so many pressures on our time. A lot of us work full time jobs and often put in extra hours or have long commutes, which leave us with little energy to do more than flop down in front of the television until it’s time to heave our weary bodies to bed. Others have a family to care for, and their days are taken up with school runs and playing catch up trying to get chores done before it’s time to pick the kids up again.
